Oubaitori is a Japanese concept describing the way in which flowers bloom in their own time, each unique and incomparable. This photographic series takes that philosophy as its foundation, exploring individuality, isolation and the power of one. Working with single cut flowers, typically used in floral arrangements and bouquets, I photographed each bloom in isolation, anthropomorphising their presence. Shot against black, the blooms emerge from darkness, their shape, form and the quality of light accentuated by the void surrounding them. The work poses a quiet but insistent question: though we share a common humanity, what does it mean to be singular?
